Sylvia Ross

Rosscare is named after Sylvia Engel Ross, shown here in a Paris artist sketch as a young woman.  She was the only child of William and Rachel Engel.  William Engel was a German immigrant in the early 1880’s.  He was a successful Bangor businessman opening up a tea company.  He saw the rich resource of lumber all around and started buying up timberland and started a logging business.  He made millions by the early 1900’s and left his fortune to his only daughter, Sylvia.  Sylvia was a community philanthropist, along with her mother and had a special heart for aging men and women who needed health services.  Upon her death in 1962, Sylvia bequeathed her estate and trust fund to Eastern Maine General Hospital to be used to house and support aging adults.  In 1981, the hospital, now called EMMC, worked with Sylvia’s trustees to establish an affiliate of EMHS that served older adults health needs.  This was the origin of Rosscare.  Sylvia’s family estate, at 44 Ohio Street, was used for elderly boarding care until 2010, at which time a new Sylvia Ross Home was built on the campus of Ross Manor.  The Ross property on Ohio Street was donated to EMMC for use by medical students. Rosscare provides many services in Maine to support aging in place.

Our Mission – Rosscare’s Never Changing Purpose

As a member of EMHS, Rosscare’s philosophy is to value aging and strive to improve the lives of older adults through a network of senior services that provide resources, education, housing, and support services for older adults, their families, and caregivers throughout the EMHS service region.
